Presentation skills are not just about standing at the front of a room and speaking clearly.

They help people organise their thinking, explain ideas, connect with an audience and have the confidence to say: “This is what I think, and this is why.”

01

The situation

Doncaster UTC actively works with local businesses and employers to give students greater exposure to the practical skills they will need in the workplace.

As part of a speaking and listening project, we were invited to support a group of students preparing and delivering presentations on subjects they genuinely cared about.

The topics included artificial intelligence, plastic pollution, gaming, peer pressure and misogyny. They did not lack ideas or opinions. The opportunity was to help them turn those ideas into clear, structured and engaging presentations, while building the confidence to deliver them in their own voice.

02

How we helped

We created a bespoke programme based on our Presentation and Presence course, adapting the content, examples and activities to suit the students and the project they were completing.

The sessions focused on:

Audience
Understanding the audience and the message they needed to land
Structure
Creating a clear beginning, middle and end
Story
Using storytelling to bring ideas to life
Slides
Keeping slides simple and purposeful
Presence
Using voice, pace, pauses and body language effectively
Practice
Practising in a way that felt natural rather than memorised
Feedback
Responding positively to feedback

The emphasis was not on producing perfect presenters. It was about helping each student communicate clearly, feel prepared and allow their personality and passion for the subject to come through.

Individual support

Some students preferred written notes and bullet points. Others used drawings, visual ideas or talked the message through before creating anything on a page. There was no single correct method.

03

Supporting the students beyond the workshop

We returned to Doncaster UTC after the initial session to see how the presentations were developing. This gave the students an opportunity to discuss their topics, test their thinking and receive practical feedback before presenting.

The progress was already clear. Their ideas had more structure, their stories were easier to follow and their individual personalities were beginning to come through.

Why it mattered

Training is not measured by how much information is delivered during a session. It is measured by what people can do differently afterwards.

04

The outcome

When we returned to watch the final presentations, the difference was brilliant to see. The students had taken the guidance, adapted it and made it their own.

Clearer
Structure
Stories became easier to follow and ideas landed with more purpose
Stronger
Evidence
Students used examples to support the points they wanted to make
More
Belief
Confidence grew as students recognised the value of their own ideas
  • Clearer structure and storytelling.
  • Stronger use of evidence and examples.
  • More confident delivery.
  • Greater passion and energy.
  • A willingness to act on feedback.

Students who had initially been uncertain about presenting were becoming more motivated and engaged. Some were even volunteering to present.

05

The feedback from Doncaster UTC

The feedback reflected that change:

Doncaster UTC feedback

“The students have absolutely loved working with you both, and it has made such a difference having your support and energy behind the speaking and listening project. Your involvement has really brought the experience to life for them, and it shows in how motivated and excited they are.”

06
The longer-term value

The value of the programme reaches beyond one presentation.

The ability to structure a message, explain an idea and communicate with confidence will help these students in interviews, meetings, further education and future workplaces.

Young people do not lack ideas. Sometimes they need the right structure, encouragement and opportunity to bring those ideas to life.

The bottom line

We did not tell the students what to think or ask them to present like someone else.

We helped them understand their audience, shape their message and communicate in a way that felt clear and authentic to them.

The result was not simply a collection of stronger presentations. It was a group of young people becoming more confident in their own voices.
